Who this book is for

1

You’ve wanted to write about your life for ages, but every time you sit down, your mind goes blank. Where do you even start?

2

You keep a journal, but the old “Dear Diary…” opener just doesn’t do it for you anymore. Surely there’s more to journaling than that?

3

You write all day for work, following the rules of algorithms, but you can’t remember the last time you wrote something purely for the joy of it.

I invite you to discover the joy of liberated writing, the type of writing that exists for just one special reader – you.

Shed off your expectations and the pressure to create beautifully composed, deep paragraphs good enough to become the seeds of the future best-seller. Instead, let your words be half-baked, unpolished, sometimes shallow, and full of tpyos.

Sniff your way to the memories

In this book, we use all our senses to access the deepest pockets of memory. Let's put your nose to work first.

Step outside and find a patch of greenery. Pick a few leaves, rub them between your fingers, and inhale the scent they release.

Depending on the season or where you are, you can try other olfactory adventures: snow or an icicle, seaweed fresh out of the water, rosemary or lavender from your mum's garden, wet moss or a just-picked mushroom in the forest. You can even sniff a sun-warmed rock – or your dog's dirty paw.

Now write down the first associations that pop into your mind. Don't overthink them. Let your nose command your pen. Start with:

I remember…

What Naked Words participants say

This is the most fun I've had with words in a very long time! […] I've been teaching writing for 40 years, and this was just what I needed to jump-start my own creative spark.”
Kathleen Adams, LPC · Founder of the Center for Journal Therapy (est. 1988), author of 14 books
I actually started writing every single day after Naked Words. I learned how to drop perfectionism and just pour it all out, letting my words be just the way they are. I feel so free now.”
Anna Che
I got an amazing insight: I can actually write while commuting to work or between work meetings! […] My inner critic was silent. I loved this feeling of freedom to just pour out whatever is on my mind!”

About the author

Marusha Mozolevskaya, laughing

Marusha Mozolevskaya is a writer, a former travel and lifestyle editor for Harper's Bazaar and Grazia, and the author of Not Just a Mom. She founded the Barcelona Journaling Festival and Girls Who Write, a platform for women who write – and those who are just beginning.

Marusha lives in Barcelona with her teenage son, Keith (or Kit), which in her mother tongue, Russian, means whale, and their little brown dog, Fika. In Scandinavian culture, fika means a much-needed coffee break — which is what all procrastinating writers go for.

And now the Naked Words program has become a book, which makes its author very happy and just a little bit paralyzed with fear.

Questions

Do I need to be good at writing?

No. This book is about writing without worrying whether it's any good. Mistakes and typos are welcome.

English isn't my first language. Is this book for me?

Yes. You write only for yourself, and nobody checks your mistakes. Marusha herself writes in a language that isn't her first.

How much time do I need each day?

All the prompts in this book are crafted with your busy schedule in mind. They’re bite-sized and easily digestible — no need to write a five-page essay (unless you really want to, in which case, please go on!).

On average, each prompt will take about 10 minutes of your time.

Can I use the prompts with clients or run a group with the book?

Absolutely! Please feel free to use the prompts with your clients, bring them into your workshops, or build a whole journaling group around the book.

Just one tiny ask: please credit Naked Words and Marusha when you use the prompts professionally. It’s always nice to play nice.
